The electric share is the number that sets Seattle apart from every other door on the network: six in ten homes already heat with electricity, most of them on resistance baseboard or cadet wall heaters, and for those homes a heat pump is a straight efficiency upgrade on the same circuit panel with no gas line to decommission and no fuel-switch rebate to file. The gas homes concentrate in the pre-war neighborhoods north of the ship canal and south of downtown, where the housing is detached, the lots carry a side yard for the outdoor unit, and the furnace ducts are already in the crawlspace. The newer stock east of I-5 and in the urban villages is the apartment half of the split, and those jobs go through the building, not the homeowner, so the first question on this door is whether the caller controls the wall the condenser mounts on.
Craftsman and Tudor houses in Queen Anne and Ballard were finished with plaster and thin walls. Heat is baseboard, a wall unit, or a leftover oil furnace. A heat pump warms those rooms and dries them in the same run.
